Humane Society looking forward to new shelter

KENNEWICK - The Benton-Franklin Humane Society is well on it's way to building a new and larger shelter.

The Humane Society purchased almost four acres of land Friday in eastern Kennewick.

Ed Dawson, the Humane Society director, says the organization need more space in order to keep up with the volume of animals. The new facility will be able to accomodate three times as many animals as the current shelter.

Dawson says, "It will help take some of the strain off of the Tri-City Animal Control and the rescue groups and make this problem a little more managable."

The project is expected to cost around $2 million. It's being funded entirely through donations. The Humane Society is still hoping to raise about $500,000.
