Thousands call about curbside recycling program

The City of Richland is being innundated with phone calls about its new curbside recycling program.

Officials are asking residents, please, only call once, they will get back to you.

For around $23 a month the city will provide seperate cans for recycling, yard waste and garbage.

With 40 percent of residents expected to sign up, city officials say the goal is to reduce the amount of waste going into the Richland landfill keeping it open longer.

During the pilot program last year,  43 percent of the waste destined for the landfill was recycled instead.

People who sign up for the program can expect to get their new cans by June.
