White Pass Ski Area Opens For The Season
It's that time of year again, when hundreds of people line up with their skis and snowboards, ready to hit the slopes.
For some, being one of the first to test the fresh powder has been a lifelong tradition--even if that life hasn't been very long.
Aaron Amidon says he came all the way from Gig Harbor with his 5 year old son, who started skiing soon after he learned how to walk.
"This is his 3rd season. And by his second season last year, he was going down some of the black diamonds," said Amidon, "I think he could possibly be better than me."
The White Pass Ski Area opened its gates this morning for the season, and hundreds of people were lined up as part of a yearly tradition.
Some have even routinely sacrificed a day of education in order to be there on opening day
"Well, I graduated this year, but I definitely was calling in sick to school the past 12 years," said Dylan Ball of Yakima.
The ski area says it received so much snow over the past week, that it could open up a hundred percent of its terrain as soon as tomorrow.
It says that hasn't been done since 1995.
"So to finally get the snow that stuck around , the big storm that's in right now. 16 inches so far and still snowing," said ski area spokeswoman, Kathleen Goyette, "We are very excited to be open. Not just us and all of our employees, but especially all of our season pass holders are ready to go."
Aaron Amidon says White Pass is still a new tradition for him and his son, but he hopes to continue it for many years to come.
"We'll spend the entire day back there, it's got terrain for everybody. From easy to intermediate, all the way until you can find some powder along the ridge," said Amidon, "It's just a great family mountain."
