CWU to Offer Sommelier Certificate Program
Central Washington University in Ellensburg will soon offer a sommelier training course aimed at teaching students how to pair wines with food.
Central will begin offering the ten-week certification course next spring for students studying the service side of the wine industry.
Instructors say restaurants want to hire workers who know how to match food with wine, in order to give diners a great experience. Central says skills learned for the certificate are tough to learn on your own.
"If you're in kind of a formalized setting, you can acquire that skill very rapidly, and definitely more marketable to the employer to have those kind of skills," says Frank Pangrazi of C.W.U.'s Wine and Beer Education Program.
Instructors say Central is the ideal place for the sommelier certificate program because of its proximity to the wine producing areas in the state.
Up to ten students are expected to take the course in the spring.
