USA Today article raises design concerns with vit plant

Hanford makes national headlines for the second time this month, as USA Today releases another story about design issues with the vitrification plant.

The story details new concerns about potential flaws in the $12 billion plant.

According to the Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board cited in the article, more tests are needed to ensure a safe design.

Carrie Meyer from the Department of Energy says the issues raised in this report are not new, and the DOE and building contractor Bechtel National are addressing them.

"We do everything we can every day to make sure that we resolve all of our issues safely. Some of these are going to take time. And we're gonna take the time, we're gonna do it right. That's our mission" said Meyer.

The vitrification plant will turn highly radioactive waste into a glass-like substance for permanent storage.
