Heritage University Event Honors Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Heritage University in Toppenish is celebrating the life of Doctor Martin Luther King Jr., as a kick off to its observance of Black History month.
More than 150 faculty, students and guests packed into the Smith Family Hall this afternoon for a celebration. Students read portions of King's famous "I Have a Dream" speech.
Organizers waited until this week to hold the event, the school doesn't have classes during the week King's birthday is observed.
"We decided we would plan it at a midpoint so that we could actually honor both, Dr. King, and it's a nice kick-off into Black History month for the month of February," says Wanda Billingsley.
Guest speakers included a pastor from the Greater Faith Baptist Church in Yakima, and one of Heritage University's board members. A choir from Heritage University also sang during the event.
