Weekend Sports Wrap
WEEKEND SPORTS WRAP
The dog-days of summer are upon us. At least on the national scene it is. Major and minor league baseball continues as does NASCAR/Nationwide racing and soccer. But for the most part, prominent national sports are in the off-season.
But we do have next month to look forward to. The London Olympics will be held in July and that’s where we begin our Weekend Sports Wrap today.
TRACK & FIELD: The U.S. is holding their annual track & field championships in Oregon over the next week. Beginning last Thursday, the year’s meet takes on extra importance as it will determine who is on the USA Olympic squad for the games in London. It is that importance which makes this weekend’s result in the women’s 100 meter race so unbelievable.
Allyson Felix and Jeneba Tarmoh finished tied, yes tied, for third place in the women’s 100 meter final on Saturday. Never mind that Carmelita Jeter won or that Tianna Madison finished second and they are on the Olympic team. The story is the literal tie between Felix and Tarmoh. Time and finish line photos proved inconclusive as to who took third. Inexplicably, USA Track and Field does not have a tiebreaker in place. Deliberating over the weekend, it was decided that there would be a run-off. If either Felix or Tarmoh did not want a run-off, there will be a coin-flip. Yes, a coin-flip. No decision as of today has been made.
NASCAR: Don’t look now but Jimmie Johnson is lurking. With eleven top 10 finishes this year so far, five-time champ Jimmie Johnson sits fourth overall in the Sprint Cup standings. He is only 25 points behind current leader, Matt Kenseth. Clint Bowyer won Sunday’s race in Sonoma to move up to seventh overall.
NHL Draft: Hockey turned its attention to the draft this weekend with the NHL draft on Saturday. 32 players from the WHL were drafted including 19 in the first round. No Tri-City Americans were drafted. The highest WHL player drafted was Ryan Murray from the Everett Silvertips. He was drafted by the Columbus Blue Jackets, second overall.
