Blue Bridge Update

Extra crews are coming from Seattle to help with the project on the Blue Bridge, and they'll work around the clock to get the job done on time.

Last night the northbound lanes of the bridge were shut down for three days,  while crews replace aging expansion joints which give the bridge flexibility.

The work is turning out to be a bigger job than contractors anticipated.  When they started removing concrete today, they discovered the new expansion joints are slightly different than the old system and the work is going to take longer then previously thought.

The state Department of Transportation says crews will work around the clock to get the northbound lanes reopened.   The bridge closure had traffic backed up about three miles this afternoon all the way to Clearwater Avenue.

The northbound lanes are currently scheduled to reopen at 5:30 Monday morning.  Over the weekend drivers need to take I-182 or the Cable Bridge to cross the river heading north.

Next weekend the southbound lanes will be shut down.
