UPDATE: Athena residents advised to boil water

11/03/12 EVENING UPDATE: City officials say test results for E. coli have come back negative, however, the Oregon Health Authority has not given the go ahead for lifting the boil water advisory.  Until such time, residents using the city's water supply are advised to boil water for a minimum of one minute before using.

The problem started Friday when a company replacing a water main had problems switching over to a new line and the pressure dropped.

That drop in pressure could have allowed harmful bacteria to grow.

Crews have flushed the system, however, it may not be until Monday evening before the boil water advisory is lifted.

City officials estimate the city’s water system serves about 450 customers.
