Richland teacher awarded $50,000
A Richland teacher who recently won a $50,000 award plans to spend the money on her students.
Deidre Holmberg is the principal at Delta High School.
The Paul G. Allen Family Foundation awarded her the Creative Leadership Award, which recognizes people who help the greater community.
Holmberg plans to use the money to buy new technology for the school, and to fund student scholarships for students heading to college.
She says the award was a complete surprise.
"I found out I was nominated and that I was being seriously considered and that I had won and it was $50,000 all in the same phone call, so I was not anticipating any announcement, I had no idea that I'd even be nominated" said Holmberg.
Holmberg already has the $50,000 check and plans to deposit it this week.
