Yakima firefighters investigate suspicious house fire

The Yakima Fire Department is investigating a suspicious fire that destroyed a home this afternoon.

Below is a news release from the Yakima Fire Department:

The City of Yakima Fire Department responded to a structure fire in the 500 block of Erickson Lane at 12:51 PM today.

17 firefighters, including a battalion commander, ladder truck, and four fire engines responded to the house.

The first engine arrived to find fire and smoke coming from nearly every window.

Firefighters were told that everyone was out of the house upon their arrival.

The attic had been converted to living space and the fire quickly spread to that space.

Although the fire on the ground floor was extinguished in customary fashion, firefighters were delayed by limited access to the attic living space.

Firefighters provided their own entrance with chain saws.

While the ground floor was brought under control quickly, the attic was declared under control about one hour from the dispatch time.

The family is being assisted by Red Cross.

Firefighters estimate the fire caused $120,000 in damage to the home.

They say the home and its contents were destroyed.
