Joshua Weeks pleads guilty to aggravated murder
A man accused of killing a Umatilla County corrections officer more than a year ago pleads guilty to the murder this week as part of a plea deal.
Yesterday, Joshua Weeks pleaded guilty to aggravated murder in the death of 42 year-old Buddy Herron.
The murder took place along Highway 11 in November 2011.
Herron was on his way to work at the Eastern Oregon Correctional Institution, when he stopped on the side of the road to help a person he thought was a stranded driver, but instead he was assaulted.
Herron was taken to a nearby hospital where he died.
In exchange for Weeks's guilty plea, the death penalty has been taken off the table as a possible sentence.
A judge will now sentence Weeks to either life in prison without the possibility of parole, or life in prison with the possibility of parole after 30 years.
Weeks is scheduled to be sentenced during the week of July 29th - August 2nd.
