City leaders in Kennewick and Richland say a new road that opened today will increase economic growth in the area.

This morning, community leaders cut the ribbon on the new Steptoe Street extension project.

The extension connects Steptoe Street to Clearwater Avenue.

The project is expected to increase development and business opportunities which means more revenue for the area.

Community leaders say they've been looking forward to today's event for years.

"You're gonna be able to get cars off of Columbia Center Boulevard, leaving more room for those that are there for other reasons. That allows people to get home much easier, much quicker, and it's a much safer route for some. It's a big day for us" said Steve Young, Kennewick mayor.

City leaders will now focus on a new road construction project to increase access to Highway 395 from this area.

That's expected to be completed by the end of next year.
