Changes to the Columbia River Treaty

Today Congressman Doc Hastings, chair of the House Natural Resource Committee, holds a hearing in Pasco about the future of the US-Canada Columbia River Treaty.

The treaty focuses on flood control and hydro powered generation.

 It will expire in 2024 but ten years prior to that the US and Canada can talk about cancelling or making amendments to the treaty.

The point of todays hearing was to hear from the people in the community about what they would like to see in the treaty moving forward.

Many of the pople weighing in on the issue are business owners who the treaty impacts daily.

The general opinon was to make sure that the new treaty continues to focus on  flood control and hydro powered generation.
