Welcome the Yakima Valley Pippins
The name for Yakima's new baseball team is revealed before hundreds of students this afternoon in Selah.
Pacific Baseball Ventures unveiled logo art for the Yakima Valley Pippins.
The team name was voted on by the public, and was the name of the first baseball team to play in Yakima in the 1930's.
The team will play in the West Coast League, a wood-bat summer league for college athletes -- team administrators say players will bring energy to the community.
"All the players in the West Coast League are currently enrolled in a two-year or four-year college. They're good kids, a lot of them were drafted right out of high school, but chose to go to college instead," said operations director Noel Zanchelli, "It's nice to have leaders like that in the community, rolemodels parents can really feel strongly about bringing their kids to the ballpark to see."
The team is also owned by the same people who own the Walla Walla sweets.
First pitch is scheduled for June at Yakima County Stadium.
