27,000 WA Students Homeless
The reasons are varied: job loss. unforeseen illness. housing foreclosures. But, the result is the same -- thousands of homeless students.
According to the office of Superintendent of Public Instruction, more than 27,000 students were reported as homeless last school year in Washington.
That number is up 5% from the previous year, and nearly 47% from 2007-2008. Districts blame a struggling job market, and local economic factors, such as the closing of a paper mill in Everett and the decline of the logging industry.
