The first of three finalists hoping to become chancellor of WSU Tri-Cities was on campus today to meet with students, faculty, and community members.

Karla Hughes says she sees secondary education as the place to begin to change lives.

Hughes is currently the provost and vice president of Morehead State University in Kentucky and has a Ph.D in agriculture.

She talked about expanding agricultural science classes on the Richland campus.

She also says she sees big potential for WSU Tri-Cities to become the university of choice for Hispanics in Washington.

"I expect this institution to grow. If we were to be successful in being the Hispanic institution of choice in this state, this institution will be large in five to ten years," said Hughes.

Another candidate for the position, Ronald Brown, visits the campus on Monday.  A third candidate, not yet named, is expected to make a visit in late February.
