Teenage boy rescued after falling into icy pond in Yakima

A teenage boy has been flown to a Seattle hospital after falling through the ice in the pond at Kiwanis Park in Yakima today.

Authorities responded around 4:30 p.m. to reports that four boys ages 12 to 14 were playing on the ice when it broke and they all fell into the water.  Three of the boys were able to swim to shore but one was not able to make it.  The three attempted to rescue the boy but could not reach him.

A bystander then attempted to rescue the boy but also was not able to reach the victim.  A 911 call was then made.  Several Yakima Police officers, including some who entered the water, were involved in the rescue attempt.

Officers were able to reach the young victim and pull him to shore where CPR was started until an ambulance and firefighters were able to take over.

Three of the boys were treated for hypothermia at Memorial Hospital.  The fourth victim has been flown to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle for treatment.
