Eight Yakima Valley dairy farms make a unique contribution to Second Harvest in Sunnyside this morning.

Farmers are donating more than 25,000 gallons of fresh milk to the organization, which will distribute about 400 gallons per week to food banks in the Yakima Valley and Tri-City areas.

Representatives from Second Harvest say they typically receive non-perishable items as a donation, but are thankful local farmers are thinking outside of the box.

"We're just really grateful for their support," said Cassie Hurley, "It's not something that we receive very often, so a regular supply of fluid milk is just incredible."

"We're in the food business, we know there's people that fall on hard times and we think they deserve high quality nutrition like other people do," said dairy farmer Bill Wavrin, "This is a way to give them a hand in getting through those tough patches."

Second Harvest currently serves about 55,000 people in the Yakima and Tri-City regions.
