A Pasco principal is being recognized for making a positive impact in our community.

Susan Sparks is this year's winner of the Martin Luther King Jr. Spirit Award from Columbia Basin College.

Sparks has been the principal of Ruth Livingston Elementary School for the past 13 years.

The school has been recognized as a Washington State Distinguished School for academic achievement.

Sparks has also been named a regional principal of the year.

She says her motivation comes from her students.

"The Martin Luther King bell-ringing celebration really means a lot to myself and my family. That's something that we've always taken our children to from the time they were little. We went there when there were just a handful of people who used to attend the ceremony, and now there are hundreds of people and so it really is special" said Sparks.

Sparks found out about the award yesterday - she says she was very surprised.

CBC will present the award at the school on Monday.
