Richland School Board fires superintendent Jim Busey

The Richland School Board fires its superintendent this afternoon, after board members review an investigation into allegations that Jim Busey had a relationship with a district staff member.

Busey has been on administrative leave for more than a month while investigators looked into the allegations.

Today, the school board reviewed the investigation results and decided Busey can longer be an effective superintendent in Richland.

They say he conducted a long-standing extramarital, sexual affair with a subordinate school district employee, and they say he pursued another romantic relationship with a woman he met through the district.

The president of the Richland School Board, Rick Jansons, says Busey violated a morals clause in his contract as superintendent, and board members say Busey has lost their trust.

So this afternoon, they unanimously voted to terminate his contract.

"This is not an easy thing to do. This is not something we wanted to do. We looked at all the options available, and selected the option that was best for the district overall" said Jansons.

Jansons says Busey also used school district property and equipment for inappropriate personal reasons.

Busey's termination as superintendent is effective immediately.

The district's Executive Director of Financial Services, Rich Puryear, will continue serving as the acting superintendent until a permanent replacement is found.

We tried reaching out to Jim Busey today, but his phone of record has been disconnected.
