Train derails near La Grande affecting area traffic
Emergency responders and Union Pacific Railroad officials report no significant hazardous material leak occurred at the site of this morning's derailment on the northside of Highway 203 east of La Grande. The derailment, which was updated to 27 total rail cars, led to a several hour closure of an eight-mile stretch of highway while responders took a closer look to assess the extent of the derailment.
The derailment, which occurred just before 2 a.m., resulted in no injuries. Two tankers were identified as containing hazardous materials. As a precaution, a few area residents were evacuated, however these residents have been allowed to return home. One lane of area traffic is closed, but expected to reopen soon.
Not all of the 27 rail cars involved in the derailment overturned as some remained upright.
