KPD's New Narcotics K9
The Kennewick Police Department is adding a new member to it's force, a 2-year-old K9 named Bear.
Unlike any other K9 in the Tri-Cities, Bear is solely trained for narcotics detection.
Bear is a lab mix and police said when the dog is only used for drugs, he does not need to be a German Shepherd.
Bear is trained to sniff heroin, crack, cocaine and methamphetamines.
He is not trained in the odor of marijuana because of newly changed laws in the state regarding the drug.
Bear is already working out in the field.
"He gives me a great sense of confidence in being able to hold those people accountable," said Officer Isaac Merkl, who will work with Bear. "Otherwise without this tool, we may not be able to do that."
Bear has already started working out in the field to help make Kennewick a drug free environment.
