Wash. House of Representatives Approve Safe Keys Legislation
A bill requiring landlords to safely secure spare keys to their rental units was unanimously approved by the House of Representatives today in Olympia.
The measure was introduced after Cody Kloepper, a maintenance man at the Villa Apartments in Richland, brutally beat and raped resident Dana Widrig three years ago. Kloepper used a duplicate key to gain entry into Widrig's apartment.
Under current law, there's no legal requirement for a landlord to safely secure spare or master keys to rental units.
The bill now goes to the Senate for consideration.
