Archery Students Sharpening Skills For Big Weekend Tournament

If you walk into the West Valley Middle School gym at any time this week, you'll find 15 students, sharpening their skills for this weekend's upcoming archery tournament at Central Washington University.

The state championship, hosted by the National Archery in the Schools Program, will feature over 600 archers from across the state, from elementary to high school.

Some of the 6th graders at West Valley Middle School say they are feeling the pressure -- it's their first tournament since starting the archery program at the school last fall.

"I feel like I'm going to be really nervous, but I really just can't wait," said Morgan Hutton, "I'm also really excited to see other kids shooting and learn from them."

"I'm very excited, a little bit nervous, like I might have one terrible shot that makes me lose," said Isaac Barnes, "But overall, I just really want to have fun there and do my best."

Coaches say archery, like any other sport, requires a lot of hard work and dedication.

However, they say the program at this school has allowed students who haven't really played sports the opportunity to know what it feels like to be in a competitive environment.

"I don't like many sports that involve running and things like that," said Hutton, "I think I found the sport that I really like."

"We feel great, [we] Don't know what to expect," said archery coach Kurt Sutton, "But I feel like the kids are going to represent us well and -- like we told them -- we're just going to go over and have a good time and meet some other kids who have the same interests,"

Morgan Hutton says she doesn't expect to return home this weekend a champion, but will certainly work her way to that level one day.

"I even have a bow at home that I shoot on the weekends and things like that," said Hutton, "I think i'll stay with archery, maybe clubs and things like that for a while."

The tournament will kick off at 8 a.m. at Central Washington University's Nicholson Pavilion.

The highest scoring teams will be sent to compete in the national championship in May.
