West Valley School Recognized For STEM Program
A Yakima school is recognized as a Lighthouse School for STEM Education this afternoon.
West Valley Junior High was presented with a banner from the state Superintendent's Office -- making it the only middle school in the state this year to be receive the Lighthouse School recognition.
STEM provides students with hands-on learning experiences, applying science, technology, engineering and math in real-world contexts.
"One of the things that we found in science as well is that our scores have gone up about almost 30 percent in the last three years," said Principal Tom Schend, "We can almost attribute the emphasis on STEM with all of the other classes supporting math and sciences as well."
The school was also awarded a $19,000 grant -- that money will go towards its STEM program.
