Steel Drum Band Hosts Workshop For Kids
Hundreds of Garfield Elementary students in Yakima get a visit from a special drum ensemble this afternoon.
Students got the chance to meet students in the University of Washington Steel Drum Ensemble.
Children got the chance to learn about the steel pan, which started Trinidad, made from old oil barrels -- kids also learned a few tips about music theory.
At the end of the day, students were treated to a live performance by the band members.
"It makes them respect the instrument and understand how proud Trinidadians are of it, and know that it has a very important history for some people," said the bands director, Shannon Dudley, "And most generally of all, it's a great story about human creativity."
The UW Steel Drum Ensemble will be playing at the Seasons Performance Hall tonight -- that show begins at 7.
