Law Enforcement Torch Run Dashes Through Yakima
Law enforcement officers in our area put on their shorts and shoes and run in support of the Special Olympics.
It's part of the Law Enforcement Torch Run.
Officers and athletes are crossing the state en route to Lakewood, where a lighting ceremony will be held at Joint Base Lewis-McChord to mark the beginning of the Special Olympic Summer Games.
Today, the run passed through Yakima, where officers from the city and Union Gap participated in the run -- one officer says he does it every year for the kids.
"That's the best way I can say it; it's just the right thing to do," said Sgt. Monty McNearny, "If you've done it, the feeling that you get when being able to see the feeling of appreciation in the athletes faces, you know it's the right thing to do."
Runners are expected to arrive at Joint Base Lewis-McChord by tomorrow afternoon.
