Father & Son Rescued After Boat Sinks on Yakima River

A father and son from Yakima were rescused this morning after their boat sank while the two were duck hunting on the Yakima River.

Yakima County Sheriff Search and Rescue got a call after 7 a.m. that the two were stranded on the Yakima River below the Mellis Road landing.

They had been duck hunting in a drift style boat.

One of the oars broke and he lost control of the boat. The boat got caught in the current and was submerged.

The victims, Samuel Hitchcock and his 13-year-old son made it to an island down river about due west of milepost 34.25 I-82. Neither was injured.

 The son had been wearing a life vest at the time.

SAR members launched the Yakima County Sheriff’s Office jet dive boat from the Mellis Rd landing.

Both individuals were retrieved and transported back to the landing were they were met by Sam’s wife who was waiting with warm dry clothes and hot cups of coffee.

The water temperature was around 44 degrees at the time.
