Fatal Accident on Highway 395 Near Hermiston Early This Morning
From the Oregon State Police-
Oregon State Police (OSP) is continuing the investigation to confirm the cause of the death of a 59-year old Umatilla man early Saturday morning along Highway 395 near Hermiston. Preliminary information indicates the cause may have been due to a medical emergency while the man was driving, but confirmation will be made in conjunction with follow up by the medical examiner.
On October 5, 2013 at approximately 3:00 a.m., a passing motorist reported a 2005 Chevrolet Impala was in the sagebrush about 60 feet off Highway 395 near milepost 2. The driver of the vehicle was unresponsive, slumped over in the driver's seat. Hermiston EMS was dispatched and shortly after arrival confirmed the adult male driver was deceased. The man's name will be released later today.
Preliminary investigation indicates the vehicle was northbound on Highway 395, traveled off the highway and through sagebrush before coming to rest on a hillside. The vehicle had no visible sign that it crashed before coming to an uncontrolled stop.
OSP troopers from the Pendleton Area Command office are investigating. Trooper Ryan Sharp is the lead investigator.
Umatilla County Sheriff's Office and Umatilla Police Department assisted at the scene.
