Cash for Candy
A Richland dental office is offering cash to kids in exchange for their Halloween candy.
Doctor Lee Ostler at the Center for Dental Health organized this charitable drive 5 years ago and every Halloween kids are paid to bring in their left over candy from trick-or-treating .
The office pays one dollar for every pound of candy and all the candy goes to the local veterans group "Operation Thank You" to send to troops overseas.
Ostler said hes love the message that sends and it's also a healthier option for kids.
"To say thank you to the troops and do something that's a charitable civic minded thing," said Ostler. "Also, there's a great health message for the kids. Excess sugar may not be the best thing for us in terms of childhood obesity and tooth decay."
Last year, the dental office was able to donate 1,000 lbs of candy to the troops and they're hoping to increase that number this year.
