Giving A Hoot
Students at Garfield Elementary in Yakima are hard at work already preparing for Christmas.
Fifth graders and kindergarteners are piecing together plastic owl ornaments, which will be packed and sent to Washington D.C. to be hung on the National Christmas Tree.
Lorita Stohr was selected to begin the project after her daughter entered her into a contest.
Stohr says she decided to make owls using plastic plates and other reusable items found around the house.
"I love to recycle, and making trash into treasure, that was one of the criterias for this project; is using recycled materials," said Stohr, "It lets the kids understand that even though you don't have those materials available, you can always find them around your house."
The owls will be shipped off to Washington D.C. tomorrow, this year's national tree is expected to be selected and chopped down in about a month.
