John Young Murder Trial

Opening statements begin in the murder trial of a Richland teen.

19-year-old John Young is charged with 1st-degree murder in the shooting death of 17-year-old Joshua Snapp last summer.

Benton County Prosecutor Andy Miller says Young planned on killing Snapp with Josh Hunt, who was convicted on 2nd-degree murder in February.

Miller says Young told someone at a party the night before the killing that Snapp was an informant and he was going to do something about it.

Defense Attorney John Crowley says Young admits to shooting at Snapp but it was never planned.

The defense claims Young was scared when he saw Hunt take the first shot and even more afraid that the gun would turn on him.

Surveillance video from the Conoco gas station in Benton City where Young and Hunt drove to after Snapp was killed was shown in court.

It shows Hunt going inside to buy cigarettes then Young later going inside to tell the cashier that there has been a murder.

The prosecution says Young and Hunt lured Snapp into the desert near Horn Rapids in Richland on July 4th to kill him for being an informant.
