Franklin County Sheriff's Office Warns of Phone Scams Targeting Area

The Franklin County Sheriff's Office says has been a recent increase in a series of fraudulent attempts to obtain money from the public using the following methods:

1) Caller claims to be law enforcement and tells victims they were caught running a red light, the victim had been sent a ticket and did not pay, the caller gives the victim instructions to pay the fine with a prepaid card to avoid a warrant.

2) A similar version to extract money has been used with the caller claiming to be from the Public Utilities District, the caller threatens to cut off victims power if money is not paid.

Although this recent threat is not new or unique to the Tri-Cities, the Sheriff's office wants to remind the public to be alert to this and any further activity of this nature.  It has never been the practice of law enforcement to collect fines over the phone.
