Tri-Cities Airport Expansion Kick-Off Event
The long-awaited, highly anticipated Tri-Cities Airport Terminal Expansion Project is kicking off and today members of the community are celebrating.
Funding for this $42,000,000 dollar project was difficult to secure for a while but it's done now and the airport is officially in Phase 1 of the 3 phases of construction.
Some key components are expanding the concourse/boarding area and making the restaurant bigger and moving it inside the security area, so that there can then be a total of four screening lines to get things moving.
The baggage area will be reconfigured, as well as the ticketing area and the front of the terminal for better traffic flow.
Airport Director Ron Foraker said this is momentous day for the future of travel here in the Tri-Cities.
"I think the Port of Pasco and the community in general has been hearing about this project and so today is really neat that we're able to kick it off in style and get started," said Foraker.
Kennewick Mayor Steve Young also spoke at the event and said this expansion is great for business travelers.
He said with Hanford, the wine industry, agriculture and so much more, it's important to get more people in and out of this airport to support thriving businesses.
The remodeling is expected to be completed by January 2017.
