Man Accused of Unlawfully Practicing Law Pleads Guilty
A man accused of illegally practicing law pleads guilty to one count of extortion and one count of unlawful practice of law.
Jose Antonio Martinez, also known as Tony Martinez, was sentenced yesterday to 364 days, the maximum sentence on unlawful practice of law.
He did not have any prior felony convictions and has credit for already serving 689 days.
Franklin County Prosecuting Attorney Shawn Sant says this case involved several victims that hired Martinez, who presented himself as an immigration attorney. As part of the plea deal, a restitution hearing will be set where victims will be able to seek reimbursement for their loses. Some victims had even been deported because of Martinez's defective misrepresentations.
