Pot Shop Supply and Demand: Will prices go down?
New marijuana processing licenses were awarded earlier this month, which should help with the short supply new recreational shops have been dealing with. New growers are now popping up all over the state including right here Central Washington.
Supply and demand they're definitely not equaling each other out right now in Washington when it comes to marijuana. Retail shop Station 420 was closed for ten days as they didn't want to get into 'price gouging' as some of the other stores we're doing
"It just doesn't seem like the right thing to do," said Adam Markus owner of Station 420 in Union Gap.
About a week and a half ago a message posted to Station 420's Facebook page revealed they would be one of the few stores to not charge what one customer calls 'outrageous prices'. Some shops were selling pot for $35 a gram, almost twice the normal rate.
"I as a business owner was being taken advantage of, I know that my customers had continuously expressed their point of view of them being taken advantage of and so I just didn't want to be a part of that"
Markus believes growers could be sitting on a backlog of product because of a steep learning curve that comes with using the state liquor board's website specifically for producers and retailers.
Throughout Washington new growers received licenses earlier this month. New Ellensburg grower Mike Graham believes his non farming background could give him a leg up to quickly move supply.
"It is complicated so it is nice to have a conventional business background and some corporate experience as well which i do have," said Graham
Graham is owner of Natural Mystic Farms-- he thinks the Liquor Control Board may have opened the recreational shops too early knowing there would be a short supply.
"There's bigger issues in making this system work than money, its not just about the money its about doing the right thing. Everybody's just got to be patient this is a new revolutionary process," said Graham
Markus is waiting to see if patience is a virtue and if his decision to stand up for his customers pays off.
"We'll wait and see if being the nice guy pays off"
