Victim's Father: You never know when your last with your family will be
A 26-year-old woman is brain-dead after being hit by a car in Kennewick Saturday afternoon.
Raquel Middleton was walking in the round-a-bout on W. Gage Blvd. and N. Center Pkwy. when a 16-year-old female driver was driving through, hit a rock, her airbags deployed and that's when she hit Middleton.
Middleton was taken to Kadlec Regional Medical Center and is now on life-support.
Middleton's sister, Tarah Teagle, said she was shocked when she got the news.
"I didn't want to believe it, we got angry with the doctors. We tried to hold on to hope that there was something we could do to keep her with us and we pleaded with the doctors, my dad even yelled at the doctors," said Teagle.
But there was nothing that could be done.
Teagle said the hospital is only keeping Middleton's body alive because she's an organ donor, a choice her she describes as selfless.
"She said, 'Once I'm done with them, I don't have any need for them, so give them to somebody else who can use them,' That was her personality, she would give you the shirt off her back," said Teagle.
Middleton was on the way to the bus stop to head to the fair with her boyfriend 30-year-old Ty Cornwell.
He was injured in the accident and has a cut on his arm.
Middleton's brother, Daryl Middleton, said she had so much energy and was the best aunt "Rocky" to her 10 nieces and nephews who miss her dearly.
"She was such a gift, she was so unique, she had such a personality," said Daryl Middleton. "She put so much care into life. When things got stagnant, she brought life."
Middleton's father Darin Middleton said their entire family was going through a tough time recently and he believes his daughter's final gift was to bring the family together through this tragedy.
He said his last words to Middleton were not joyful and he wants people to remember that no grudge is worth holding.
"You never know when your last day with your family will be," said Darin Middleton. "You better take a long, hard look at how important any disagreements or conflicts are."
Middleton's family said she will remain on life-support until matches are found for her organs.
The Benton County Prosecutor's Office said no paperwork has come in from the police deparment for possible charges to be filed against the 16-year-old driver.
