For years, rugby was treated as a club sport at Central.

But over the past four years, the men's club has established itself as a powerhouse  -- qualifying for the USA Rugby Championship every year since 2011.

The women's team has also made appearances in competitions in the past.

One player says being added to the varsity roster will not only give players the benefits other athletes have, but also open up opportunities to pursue rugby as a profession.

"I've gotten to train with the national team in 7's and I've gotten to play with all-Americans," said junior Tanner Barnes, "It's definitely something I want to be part of my life moving forward. Going varsity is only going to accel it."

"For us on the men's side [we get] To really build on what we started a long time ago and continue to show the success we have on the field and off the field," said men's head coach Tony Pacheco, "On the women's side, it's a great chance to build something from, in a lot of ways, the ground up."

The men's team will be playing this weekend against Western Washington University in the "Cascade Cup" in Ellensburg -- kickoff is at 1 pm.
