Washington State University Tri-Cities opens its new nursing program center on Lee Blvd. in Richland.

More than 100 nursing students started the new semester there yesterday.

Kadlec Regional Medical Center agreed to lease the 10,000 sq. ft. facility for $1 per year, which is basically a $2.5 million donation.

The new center has four classrooms with video conferencing equipment, a practice lab and two simulated labs.

Students say the new facility allows for more space to get hands on experience.

"It's different because we have separate rooms designed for simulation practices," said nursing student Kourtney Hawk. "It's much similar to actual hospital settings and clinical settings. It's so much more life like."

Local hospitals donated hundreds and thousands of dollars but an additional $145,000 is needed to equip a second lab.

The students and faculty say it'll take some getting used not being on WSU campus anymore but they say being so close to Kadlec makes for an easier relationship between them and the hospital.
