A Place to Call Home
City officials break ground on a piece of land.
In just a matter of months, this pile of soil and dirt will be transformed into two brand new homes.
The Kittitas-Yakima Valley Community Land Trust program says the homes will be sold to first time homebuyers, low income families, at a price significantly below market rate.
Buyers are able to afford the homes because the land trust owns the land beneath them, helping to reduce the price.
This is the non-profit organization's first project, and community members who have worked with low income families say it's a blessing.
"It just gives the family such a sense of peace in knowing they have a safe, comfortable, affordable, energy efficient place to live," SAID Sherri Ott.
The project is expected to be completed in about 3 months, with the first house being completed in a month and a half.
The Land Trust program is largely funded by state affordable housing funds and private investors from around the area.
