The "Friends" of Pioneer Park Aviary in Walla Walla raised nearly $85,000 to help rebuild the aviary.

City council members voted to impose a six-month moratorium on the decommissioning of the aviary that will end in August.

That gives the local group, "Friends," some time to try and raise enough to rebuild the facility and take over full operation by next year.

The total for rebuilding is nearly $400,000.

The city of Walla Walla has half the money and about $100,000 is still needed.

City funding for the enclosed area housing more than 170 birds of different species, has been on the chopping block for more than three years now.
