A local war veteran who served in Iraq for five years receives his piece of the 'American Dream' today, a mortgage-free home in Pasco.

Army Sergeant Charles Aikala and his family have been living in the home for about a week now and Aikala said it truly is a dream come true.

The crowd cheered as a motorcade escorted the Aikala family to the veteran's memorial in Columbia Park, where Aikala was honored for his service in Iraq from 2006 to 2011.

He got into an intense gun battle where he was forced into an area where IED exploded and he suffered multiple injuries.

Aikala has earned several awards including a purple heart.

He is originally from Tacoma and said he's proud to call Pasco his new home and explains the feelings of owning his new house.

"Security, ownership and the freedom to do whatever we want in our own home," said Aikala.

At the end of the event, veterans and other members of the community thanked Aikala for his service one-by-one as they shook his hand.

Fairway Independent Mortgage teamed up with the non-profit, Military Warriors Support Foundation's Homes 4 Wounded Heroes, in order to make today's donation to the Aikala family.
