The Friends of Badger Mountain launching a major fundraising effort today in hopes of expanding hiking and recreation trails across the ridges around the Tri-Cities.

The goal of the $1.5 million Ridge Preservation and Trail Campaign is to create a 20-mile trail that connects from Amon Creek across four ridges -- Little Badger, Badger, Candy and Red Mountains -- to the Yakima River.

Friends of Badger Mountain say with some 200,000 hikers, runners and bikers who annually enjoy the trails on Badger, it's time to expand the trail and preserve the habitat unique to each ridge.

The campaign is off to a strong start thanks to a half-million dollar pledge from CH2MHill.
