Meaning of Ash Wednesday

Today marks Ash Wednesday for Catholics around the world.

Ash Wednesday signifies the beginning of lent, a time of prayer, fasting and giving.

Lent then ends with a celebration on Easter.

Monseigneur Auve, pastor of Holy Spirit in Kennewick said ashes are meant to be a symbolic reminder for Catholics.

"The people in the church are asked to be prepared for judgement. That's the meaning of the ashes it's to remind us of death and that we will be turned to ashes to ashes and dust to dust," said Auve.

During lent catholics usually give something up or try to do something extra to better themselves.
