The "Friends" of Pioneer Park Aviary in Walla Walla raises nearly $4,000 to help rebuild the aviary.

City council members voted to impose a six-month moratorium last week on the decommissioning of the aviary, giving the local group time to try and raise enough to rebuild the facility and take over full operation by next year.

City funding for the enclosed area housing more than 170 birds of different species, has been on the chopping block for more than three years now.

After the council originally voted to cut this years funding three weeks ago, "Friends" and other members of the community rallied together to keep the aviary open.

The city will continue funding the aviary through the end of the year and will check back in six months to make sure fundraising is going as planned.
