Local Student is Poetry Out Loud Champion
One local student is the 2014 Washington State Poetry Out Loud champion.
Elizabeth Mo, a senior at Kamiakin High School in Kennewick, said just in the last few years poetry has become a passion of hers and this competition only furthers that.
Mo performed three recitations at state finals on Saturday in Tacoma including, "Spring," by Gerard Manley Hopkins, "In Memoriam: Martin Luther King Jr." by June Jordan and "Dover Beach" by Matthew Arnold.
Mo has been working since november to memorize these poems.
English teachers at Kamiakin helped her by making sure she understood every word in the poem to help her better interpret it, bringing the poem to life.
Mo said she's is thrilled to win the title.
"It was kind of crazy actually, I looked over at my mom immediately and saw her and she was crying and it was a big flood of emotions," said Mo.
Mo won an all expenses paid trip to Washington DC to compete in the national finals on April 29th and 30th.
She will also receive $200 and her school gets $500 to purchase poetry materials.
From all of us here at Your Local ABC, we wish Mo the best in the national competition.
