WA State Unveils Tougher Stance on Hanford
Washington State Governor Jay Inslee and state Attorney General Bob Ferguson are stepping up the pressure on the Energy Department to improve its hanlding of cleanup at Hanford.
They're proposing a revised step-by-step schedule to complete construction of the Waste Treatment Plant and begin treating waste as soon as possible.
A few of the main concerns are new specific requirements to get waste out of the leaking single-shell tanks, new environmental safety requirements for groundwater treatment and new terms to the 2010 consent decree including regular progress reports filed with the state and the court.
Just 10 days ago, the Energy Department ordered a new, faster timetable for pumping out waste from tank AY-102 -- a massive double-shell waste tank.
