Moving Forward After a Fatal Crash

Walla Walla High School students mourn the loss of their friends and peers.

15-year-old Athena Bentley, 16-year-old Uziel Bermoy and 17-year-old Aidan Boede were killed in a single car roll over crash on Mill Creek Rd. early yesterday morning.

Nick Groom was friends with Bentley and Boede and said he was shocked when he heard the news.

"It hit me pretty hard and it's been a tough day but we have our family and our community," said Groom.

Groom said he last saw boede in class on Friday.

"He came into class and was making fun of the teacher, he was a goof ball," said Groom. "He loved school, friends, football and wrestling."

Investigators said the Dodge Neon involved in the acdcident hit a dirt embankment, overcorrected, rolled while crossing the eastbound lanes andcrashing through a barbed-wire fence and landing on its roof.

The Walla Walla Sheriff's Office said the driver, who has not yet been identified, may have been speeding.

Walla Walla School District Superintendent Mick Miller said this tragedy will have a long lasting impact on this small community.

"These are kids that also touched the lives of many of our staff and obviously many of our students and we just know that the passing of three kids that are at that age really has a significant impact," said Miller.

The high school will likely have its Grief Busters Program going through the end of the week.

Counselors will be at Wa-Hi all day tomorrow to speak to students and staff.

Safe rooms, where students and staff can go to if they need to get away from the classroom, will also be availabe.

Groom said he's glad he and his peers have the support of an incredible community.

"I love Walla Walla because it's such a great, built community and we all are here to support each other," said Groom.

Autopsies for Bentley, Bermoy and Boede were scheduled to begin this morning.

We'll bring you an update as soon as we receive one from the Walla Walla Coroner's Office.

All of us at Your Local ABC send our condolences to the families and friends of the three teens.
