ABOUT THE EVENT:
Concerto of Dance is an evening of artistic collaborations with beautiful dance, breathtaking music, and thought provoking movement by two different dance companies.
The Performing Company was originally started in 1987 and performed through out the Walla Walla valley until 1999 when Hutson-Fish disbanded the group in order to focus her career more on her teaching. This studio based dance company was formed in order to give the most talented and dedicated young dancers more performance opportunities. In August of 2012, dancers were adjudicated and chosen by two artists from Teatro della Opera Roma, Carlo Scardovi and Catia Brandoli, who then worked with the ten dancers for one week to set the Faust Ballet by Gonoud. Under the direction of Idalee Hutson-Fish and assistant direction of Raffaele Exiana, The Performing Company has been reborn. This season they have been highlighted in performances at Waterbrook Winery, in Peter and the Wolf with the Walla Walla Symphony, and most recently were named Walla Walla’s Best Dance Crew. They have been rehearsing 6-8 hours per week in preparation for this upcoming performance.
The Performing Company will be presenting six different works for CONCERTO OF DANCE. They will open the evening with the fourth movement of Richard Straus’s Death and Transfiguration which represents the moment after death when the soul is being transfigured. Omen of Alfama is a pas de deux danced by Summer Wardlaw and Caleb Leitch and explores the sometimes painful moments in a loving relationship. Into the Trees is a modern work inspired by Hutson-Fish’s interpretations of her husband Gary’s love of the forest, the woods and the creatures that inhabit them. A much awaited collaboration between Hutson-Fish and the incandescent voice of Diane Grey Chamberlain with Jacki Wood as the accompanist, five dancers will bring physical reverence to the Ave Maria by Giulio Caccini. Miss Allison Keppel, formally of Spectrum Dance Theater, has created a work on eight members of the company exploring the world of Dreams. The finale, the grandioso work of Carlo Scardovi, internationally renowned dancer and choreographer who can boast of studying with the great Rudolph Nureyev himself, has restaged his Faust Ballet on The Performing Company. This is a virtuoso piece displaying the art of classical ballet at its finest.
We welcome back to the stage Coriolis Dance Collective directed by Natascha Greenwalt Murphy and Christin Call. Natascha, a former student of Hutson-Fish and former member of The Performing Company is always an inspiration to share the stage with. Her company will present three different works by three different choreographers. Diciduous Urge (excerpt) to music by The Knife by well known Seattle choreographer Rainbow Fletcher is a bold and playful duet with Greenwalt Murphy and Christin Call. Real Gone, a solo danced by Marissa Quimby and choreography by Lauren Edson is a moody style mix with a night club feel to the music of Department of Eagles. Sleek, edgy, and pure is what defines the choreography of Zoe Scofield in the third piece danced by Coriolis Dance Collective. When We Were Young will be danced by Greenwalt Murphy, Christin Call, Marrissa Quimby, and Richland, Washington native, Hannah Crowley.
We invite you to join us for this dance collaboration with something for everyone, be it classical ballet, edgy modern dance or the voice of a goddess. CONCERTO OF DANCE, one performance only, March 23rd at 7:30pm at Cordiner Hall on the Whitman College Campus.
